Medications

What side effects can you expect?

Various medications have different side effects, but not everyone experiences them. The most common ones include headache, gastrointestinal disorders, dizziness, and drowsiness.

Some medications may affect your mood, triggering depression or apathy. Monitor your own condition once you start taking the medication, so you can recognize whether you are experiencing any side effects. If they are severe or concerning, contact your medical advisor to discuss an alternative treatment.

I have small children, what essential medicines should I keep at home?

Small children can get sick and feverish quickly, so it’s always good to have some liquid pain relief, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen on hand – there are a range of brand names for these drugs, but in the US, they are best known as Tylenol and Advil, while Nurofen is common in Australia. These medications can soothe headaches and reduce fever, and ibuprofen also acts as an anti-inflammatory so it is the best option if your child is in pain from an injury such as a sprain. Dosage is calculated based on your child’s weight. See your doctor if the illness persists.

Why are generic drugs cheaper than brand-name ones?

Unlike the manufacturer of an original (brand-name) medicine, the generic company doesn’t have to experiment or test the drugs, they simply make the drugs according to the proven formula. They do need to prove that their cheap version is exactly as effective as the original brand. Advertising is also not an issue, because the drugs are simply marketed as a cheaper version of the well-known brand. Without all the extra expense of experimenting, testing and advertising, generic brands can get their products out to the market at a much lower cost.

General medicine

Can I drink alcohol while on antibiotics?

Antibiotics are used to fight bacterial infections. While they are extremely effective in fighting infection, they can also come with side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, headache or drowsiness. You should avoid alcoholic drinks while you are on antibiotics, because the ethyl alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotics, while aggravating your symptoms. When your body is processing alcohol, it produces acetaldehyde which can cause stomach upsets and nausea, and these symptoms may increase when you take antibiotics. Both antibacterial remedies and alcohol can cause issues with drowsiness, cognitive function and coordination – when they are ingested together, your symptoms will become much worse. Also, when you are sick, the best way to heal your body is to stay hydrated and rest, while drinking will deplete fluids, and the process of breaking down the alcohol will take away the energy needed to fight the infection.

What is the difference between a headache and a migraine?

A headache will cause pain in the head, face or upper neck, and can vary from a mild discomfort to extreme pain. It can generally be treated by over-the-counter pain relief such as aspirin or paracetamol. However, many headaches are triggered by mild dehydration, so always have a glass of water before reaching for the pain relief! Headaches can also be caused by eye strain, so step away from the computer to give your eyes a rest if necessary.

While a migraine can often be experienced as an extremely intense headache, it also manifests other symptoms, such as distortion of vision, sensitivity to light, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. You may experience preliminary symptoms such as stiffness in the neck or blind spots, before you reach the headache phase, which can be mild and transient or severely debilitating. Once the headache has subsided, you may feel drained, exhausted and disoriented. Keeping a migraine journal can help you identify any triggers, such as hormonal shifts, alcohol or certain foods. If you are experiencing regular migraines, talk to your doctor about establishing a treatment plan, including appropriate medication.
